Hello, I'm Tom - KB2URI
I’m a lifelong technology enthusiast, amateur radio operator, and IT professional based in Western New York.
My interests span amateur radio, RF engineering, networking, cybersecurity, systems administration, emergency communications, SDR experimentation, and building resilient technology systems.
Professionally, I work in Information Technology with a focus on infrastructure, systems management, cybersecurity, automation, and operational reliability. Outside of work, much of that same passion carries into amateur radio and technical experimentation.
License Class: General Class Amateur Radio Operator
Location: Buffalo, New York
Grid Square: FN02
Interests: HF, Digital Modes, SDR, Portable Operations, Infrastructure, Remote Systems, and Emergency Communications
How I Got Into Radio
Amateur radio originally drew me in through a fascination with communications technology, antennas, propagation, and the ability to build systems capable of connecting people across the world.
Over time, the hobby evolved into a broader interest in radio infrastructure, digital communications, software-defined radio, portable deployments, networking, and emergency preparedness.
Today, amateur radio remains one of the best combinations of hands-on engineering, experimentation, public service, and continuous learning available anywhere.
Technical Interests
- HF, VHF, and UHF communications
- Digital modes including FT8 and WSJT-X
- Software Defined Radio (SDR)
- Remote radio operation and networking
- Linux and Raspberry Pi systems
- Infrastructure and cybersecurity
- Emergency and deployable communications
- Automation and scripting
- Antenna and tower systems
- Resilient and off-grid technology
Station & Projects
My station and projects continue to evolve over time and include a mix of traditional amateur radio equipment, SDR platforms, Linux-based systems, portable communications gear, and custom-built infrastructure.
Current areas of experimentation include:
- Digital mode operation and monitoring
- Remote-access radio systems
- Raspberry Pi-based radio infrastructure
- Portable and rapid-deployment communications
- Backup power and resilient networking
- SDR monitoring and signal analysis
- Automation tools for radio and IT systems
Professional Background
In addition to amateur radio, I have a professional background in Information Technology, systems administration, cybersecurity, asset management, and infrastructure operations.
My work has involved managing and supporting business technology environments, improving operational efficiency, strengthening cybersecurity posture, and implementing reliable infrastructure solutions for real-world business needs.
I strongly believe in practical, reliable technology solutions that balance security, usability, maintainability, and resilience.
Why This Site Exists
KB2URI.org exists as a place to share projects, technical notes, lessons learned, experiments, and ideas related to amateur radio, technology, and communications systems.
Some projects succeed immediately. Others become excellent lessons in troubleshooting and persistence.
Either way, the goal is to document useful information that others in the amateur radio and technology communities may find helpful.
Outside the Shack
Beyond radio and IT, I enjoy hands-on technical projects, infrastructure design, problem solving, emergency preparedness, and learning how systems work from the ground up.
I also strongly support the spirit of amateur radio: experimentation, mentorship, technical curiosity, and helping others learn.
Feel free to explore the site, check out the projects and blog, and follow along as new experiments and ideas are added.
Thanks for stopping by KB2URI.org.
73,
Tom - KB2URI
